Why A Furniture Bank?
Furniture is often overlooked in the continuum of care for families and individuals overcoming housing insecurity. Yet a place to live is only the first step toward a permanent home. Kansas City lacks 64,000 units of affordable housing, leaving 87% of extremely low-income renters cost-burdened. For struggling families, furniture often falls to the bottom of the list of critical expenses, after rent, food, gas, healthcare, and childcare. However, an empty, unfurnished home is detrimental to every other aspect of daily life: from school and work to health and self-esteem.
Our collaborative model fills a critical gap in the existing continuum of social services available in Kansas City. We partner with 80 case management agencies for client referrals. Each of our partners provides wrap-around case management services, uplifting families and individuals through housing, job, health, and childcare support. They include domestic violence shelters, transitional living centers, prison re-entry, schools, hospitals, foster care coordinators, refugee resettlement services, and many others.
Everyone who visits Flourish has experienced loss and worked hard to become housed. For many guests, Flourish is the final steppingstone to independence. When families are referred to shop, we eliminate the cost barrier to acquiring high-quality furnishings for the entire home. With large and small items, we invest average of $1,200 in furnishings per home, creating safe, comfortable, and personal spaces where families will thrive.
